Green party time!

MY BABY IS GOING TO BE ONE!!! Can’t believe it’s been a year! Wow what an amazing year. It’s also Mr Ecochick’s 30th birthday so a party is called for. We’ll be doing a green eco friendly birthday that will not waste a lot of money and will create little to no waste or rubbish. First way to reduce rubbish and save money was to send our invites via email, text and facebook. I spent quite a lot of time on the invite and am very proud of how it looks. I do not feel anything is taken away from it by not having it printed. I like that it’s only on the internet and not on any trees.
The evite. Was fun.
We’ve asked for no gifts or cards as John has enough toys and even though we’re careful about what he has he still seems to have a lot of toys! Though if people were to bring gifts I would much rather they were either homemade (LOVE homemade) or second hand/ recycled.
Then there is the party itself. Normally to make life easier you use paper plate, cups, etc but not this year we’ll use “real” plates and crockery and then just chuck them in the dishwasher. We will use cloth tablecloths, if you were having a themed birthday party you could buy a few metres of fabric and use that as a table cloth/ napkins/ flags/ hats and then reuse that to make something else from or even cut it up for wrapping paper.

No party is complete without decorations and nothing says Party like balloons but sadly Balloons are treated with ammonia, tetramethyl thiuram disulfide, zinc oxide and added plasticizers (and are harmful to marine life if they make it to the ocean rather than the landfill (which is a crap option too). So I was thinking of making some cool giant pompons instead. These can be made from recycled tissues paper or used wrapping paper. So I will make one or two of these for the letterbox as everyone knows that balloons on the letterbox signals “party over here!”.

Inside we’ll put up slingers (Dutch streamers) these are made from paper and being Dutch we fold them up nicely to be reused another year. You could also make some cloth flags to hang up or make your own party hats instead of buying some, though if these are made from paper they can be recycled anyways. Instead of balloons inside we’re going to hang up Chinese lanterns; I think I have some floating around from our wedding otherwise you can buy them cheaply and then recycle them afterwards.
This year we can get away with not doing all the extras like games and party favours as John is only a year but might not be able to do this in a few years time. Surely you nest has some great green party favours ideas and games. I like the idea of making something at the party to take home or giving each child a seedling. So till next year then until then break it’s party time!!!

Some really great green party links:

Hey Ecochicky! I have some paper poms poms that I didn’t end up using for my wedding if you want them. They were from a friend’s wedding so they are super recycled but in perfect condition. Let me know if you want them. I’ll need to go out to my olds and see if I can find them.

Also, if you need any plates, cutlery, table cloths etc, I have HEAPS that I collected for the wedding. All yours if you want to borrow.
