I wanted to make some jam today but the jars I wanted to use had horrible sticky label goo left on them. Don’t you just hate the sticky mess left by labels? I’ve never had any luck removing label goo easily or quickly (I always get there in the end but it can take a while!) until I read Simple Greenish Living. Who would have guessed use good old peanut butter!?! Simple Greenish Living put the peanut butter on and left it overnight then removed the goo with a toothbrush, but I wanted the jars immediately and I didn’t have an old toothbrush lying around so I improvised.
Here's what I did:
Here's what I did:
I put a thin layer of peanut butter all over the sticky label. Tip: only use a thin layer of peanut butter as a thick layer just gets extra messy and doesn’t get the goo off any quicker.
I used steel wool and scrubbed the label off.
I used super hot water to get rid of the peanut butter and clean the jar. Now I have lovely crystal clear jars.

Peanut butter also works wonders on chewing gum that has somehow made its way into childrens' hair.... Much less stressful than a pair of scissors!
ReplyDeleteI know! I can remember having to cut some out of my hair as a kid! Wish we'd used peanut butter then!
ReplyDeleteHi - Thanks for a terrific tip! I'll add it to my ever-growing list of Useful Stuff!
ReplyDeleteI just use tea tree oil, a little bit on a cloth and rub it off
ReplyDeleteOoh, thanks for that - I struggle getting labels off wine bottles before turning them into cheeseboards in the kiln! I will try today!
ReplyDeleteGood to know! I would never have thought of this myself. Thanks for sharing.
