I love the daily green website and I saw these tips a few days ago so wanted to share them. I’ve used their ideas and added a few things of my own.
Don’t buy bottled drinks – We use a water purifier on our tap and have a sodastream machine. This reduces the amount of bottles coming into our home and also leaving again.
Buy local – find a farmers market near you and buy your fruit and veggies from there. Not only can you normally buy food cheaper it’s also fresher and you're supporting local farmers.
Dispose of the disposables – use “real” crockery and cutlery also use cloth as much as possible rather than paper. Banish excess packaging – buying larger sizes or in bulk will reduce packaging and normally save you money.
Bring your own bags – I bring my own carry bags and produce bags to the supermarket. I carry small fold out bags in my handbag too so no need for plastic bags when buying from a store.
Grow your own - I’m busy turning large areas of our property into veggie gardens. We’re also planting fruit trees. Yummy. If you don’t have much space you can grow veggies or herbs in containers.
Eat less meat or go vegetarian - meat is expensive. We’re vegetarians and this saves us truck loads of money not to mention our reduced environmental impact.
Use your appliances wisely – we unplug/ turn off at the wall appliances that aren’t currently being used. When buying new research the company and the appliance's water and energy rating.
Cook – we make most of our food from scratch (well Mr Ecochick does most of the cooking) this saves us money and is better for you. This will also reduce the amount of packaging you’re bringing into your home. Lots of people use meal plans to help save some money but I’m very much a depends on what I feel like eating on the day kind of person though we have ingredients in the cupboards for a large combination of meals.
Educate yourself – whether it’s a new recipe that can be made from what you have on hand, or how to grow your own carrots or reduce your environmental impact in other ways. Keep reading and learning.
Thanks for sharing the great tips, Madeleine. I'm doing almost all of them but I admit that I ALWAYS forget to bring my cloth bags into the grocery store...Gotta get better at that. ;-)

Good for you. I find I have to leave some bags in my car otherwise I forget them too and man do I hate that! Normally we are going out to the supermarket so I remember them but if I just pop by I don’t always have bags either. So I find having the little ones in my handbag really help.
ReplyDeleteWe think and live alike. Very good post.
ReplyDeleteOur shopping bags live in the car, and we shop about every 2 weeks. In between my husband walks to our local supermarket.
ReplyDeleteWe recently changed to an AEG washing machine. Because we use the grey water in the garden, I am shocked to SEE what a reduction in water use there is. And the machine is more efficient, the washing comes clean!
We don't do fizzy drinks, except as a treat. The fizz, carbon dioxide, is acidic, and part of the cause of osteoporosis. We also have the water filter, but mostly drink fruit juice. In Tetrapak which we send for recycling.
Oh and we're also vegetarian but GINKs, green no kids ;~) Found you via Carol's Bloom Day.
@Elephant's Eye GINKs I love it!!! A grey water that's something I really want to do too. We've just bought a new bosch wm can wait to actually use it!
